Το ρεμπέτικο είναι ένα είδος μουσικής που έχει τις ρίζες του από την εποχή του βυζαντίου. Αυτό το γνωρίζουμε κι από τον ίδιο τον Μάρκο Βαμβακάρη που σε μια ζωντανή ηχογράφηση του αναφέρει πως τα τραγούδια του είναι βυζαντινά . Το ρεμπέτικο αναπτύχθηκε κυρίως στα παράλια της Μικρά Ασίας , στα μέρη όπου αναπτύχθηκε , κυρίως σύχναζαν άνθρωποι του υποκόσμου .Άνθρωποι που έκαναν χρήση διάφορων ναρκωτικών ουσιών ,άνθρωποι που ήταν παραδείγματα προς αποφυγήν. Παρόλα ταύτα οι περισσότεροι κάτοικοι σιγομουρμούριζαν διάφορους σκοπούς από αυτά τα τραγούδια γιατί παρόλο που ήταν απαγορευμένα ο περισσότερος κόσμος τα αγαπούσε. Το ρεμπέτικο μεταφέρθηκε στην κυρίως Ελλάδα με την καταστροφή της Σμύρνης. Οι κάτοικοι της Σμύρνης μεταναστεύοντας στην Ελλάδα μετάφεραν τα ήθη και έθιμα τους, ένα από αυτά είναι και το ρεμπέτικο.
Το ρεμπέτικο χωρίζεται σε τρεις κύκλους. Ο πρώτο ξεκινάει γύρω στο 1922, από τους πρόσφυγες, τους φαντάρους, τους φυλακισμένους. Σε εκείνη την δεκαετία το τριάντα ακούγονται δίσκοι με ονόματα μεγάλων όπως της Ρόζας Εσκενάζυ. Αυτός ο κύκλος έχει στοιχεία σμυρναίικα, με πρώτα όργανα το ούτι και το σαντούρι. Στον δεύτερο κύκλο κυριαρχούν το μπουζούκι και ο μπαγλαμάς. Είναι η εποχή που το ρεμπέτικο αρχίζει να βγαίνει από το περιθώριο. Εκεί δεσπόζουν τα ονόματα του βαμβακάρη, του Δελιά, του Μπάτη, του Μπαγιαντέρα. Ο τρίτος κύκλος είναι ο κύκλος του Τσιτσάνη. Η εποχή της πείνας, του πολέμου, του τρόμου, των φυλακών, του Εμφυλίου και του κρεματορίου.
