Με το ποίημα αυτό ο Καβάφης διατυπώνει ένα ειρωνικό σχόλιο για τους ανθρώπους που πιστεύουν ότι μπορούν να κάνουν τον εαυτό τους άτρωτο απέναντι στην κακία των συνανθρώπων τους.Στις δύο πρώτες στροφές ο ποιητής μας μεταφέρει, σε πρώτο πρόσωπο, τα λόγια του ήρωά του, ενώ η τρίτη και καταληκτική στροφή φέρνει τη ριζική ανατροπή της κατάστασης του ήρωα, δημιουργώντας έτσι έντονη δραματική ειρωνεία και υπονομεύοντας την αρχική αισιοδοξία του.Ο ήρωας του ποιήματος, ο Αιμιλιανός Μονάη, ο οποίος είναι βέβαια δημιούργημα του ποιητή, εκφράζει τη σκέψη πως μπορεί να φτιάξει μια «πανοπλία» με τον τρόπο που θα συμπεριφέρεται και με τα λόγια του, ώστε να αντιμετωπίζει άφοβα πλέον τους κακούς ανθρώπους, έχοντας κρύψει κάθε αδυναμία του. Ο ήρωας πιστεύει πως μπορεί να υιοθετήσει μια τελείως διαφορετική συμπεριφορά και προσωπικότητα από αυτή που έχει στην πραγματικότητα και να ξεγελάσει έτσι τους εχθρούς του ή τους κακοπροαίρετους ανθρώπους, βγάζοντας προς τα έξω την εικόνα του άφοβου και χωρίς ανασφάλειες και αδυναμίες ανθρώπου.Η ιδέα του Αιμιλιανού Μονάη βασίζεται στην πεποίθηση πως αν κατορθώσει να αλλάξει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο τον βλέπουν οι άλλοι, αν μπορέσει να δημιουργήσει μια διαφορετική εικόνα για τον εαυτό του, δεν θα μπορούν πλέον να εντοπίσουν τις αδυναμίες του και τα τρωτά του σημεία κι έτσι δεν θα είναι σε θέση να τον πληγώσουν. Ο ήρωας του ποιήματος πιστεύει πως χρησιμοποιώντας αλλεπάλληλα ψέματα για τον εαυτό του, θα κατορθώσει να γίνει άτρωτος απέναντι στις εχθρικές βλέψεις τον άλλων ανθρώπων.
Μια τέτοια επιδίωξη έχει βέβαια ένα σημαντικό κόστος, καθώς ο άνθρωπος που επιχειρεί να αλλοιώσει την ταυτότητά του με ψέματα και υποκρισίες, καταλήγει να χάνει τον εαυτό του, να αλλοτριώνεται και να ζει τελικά μια ζωή μέσα στο ψέμα και την ανασφάλεια, χωρίς ποτέ να είναι σε θέση να δείξει τον πραγματικό του εαυτό. Ο Καβάφης, μάλιστα, ενώ θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να έχει παρόμοιες σκέψεις, μιας και η ιδιαιτερότητα των ερωτικών του προτιμήσεων τον καθιστούσε ευάλωτο απέναντι στην κριτική και στις κακόβουλες επιθέσεις, δεν συμφωνούσε ποτέ με αυτή την τακτική. Το ίδιο θέμα, άλλωστε, το έχει πραγματευτεί με αριστουργηματικό τρόπο και στο ποίημα «Ηγεμών εκ Δυτικής Λιβύης» όπου δηλώνει με σαφή τρόπο την εναντίωσή του σε οποιαδήποτε προσπάθεια των ανθρώπων να υποκριθούν κάτι που δεν είναι. Ο ποιητής θεωρεί πως οι άνθρωποι οφείλουν να σέβονται τον εαυτό τους και να ζουν με την αλήθεια της φύσης τους, χωρίς να επιχειρούν με ψέματα και υποκρισίες να παρουσιάσουν τον εαυτό τους διαφορετικό απ’ ό,τι είναι. Γι’ αυτό το λόγο, βέβαια, ο Καβάφης παρουσίασε στα ερωτικά του ποιήματα τις πραγματικές του επιθυμίες, αφήνοντας τον εαυτό του εκτεθειμένο στην αντίδραση της συντηρητικής κοινωνίας στην οποία ζούσε.
