The reciprocal use of the passive

In Greek you can use some verbs in the passive voice to express reciprocity (an action that the subjects of the verb do to each other). These verbs are often used in the plural (e.g. αγαπιόμαστε, τηλεφωνιόμαστε, συναντιόμαστε). When they are used in the singular, one of the participants of the reciprocity appears in a prepositional phrase with με.

Η Aγκάθα και η Κλειώ συναντιούνται κάθε απόγευμα Η Αγκάθα συναντιέται με τη φίλη της την Κλειώ κάθε απόγευμα

Reciprocity is also expressed in Greek by the structures: (a) by the prefix αλληλο-:

Τα αδέρφια πρέπει να αλληλοστηρίζονται σε κάθε δυσκολία

(b) sometimes we can emphasize the meaning of reciprocity by adding μεταξύ μας/σας/τους:

Οι δυο καλύτεροί μου φίλοι δεν γνωρίζονται μεταξύ τους Θα κάνουμε ένα πάρτι για να γνωριστούμε καλύτερα μεταξύ μας

(c) an active verb can also be used with the phrase ο ένας / η μία τον / την άλλο/η:

Ο Πέτρος και η Μαρία δεν αντέχει (αντέχουν) ο ένας τον άλλο πια
