The origin of the word theatre

The word comes originally from the Greek θέατρο, meaning roughly, ‘a place to behold’. The theatre of ancient Greece consisted of three types of drama: tragedy, comedy, and the satyr play. The origins of theatre in ancient Greece, according to Aristotle (384–322 BCE), the first theoretician of theatre, are to be found in the festivals that honoured Dionysus
