Linking words

Linking words help you to connect ideas and sentences when you speak or write Greek. We can use linking words to give examples, add information, summarise, sequence information, give a reason or result, or to contrast ideas.

Here’s a list of the most common linking words and phrases

Giving examples

Για παράδειγμα, παραδείγματος χάριν, λόγου χάριν  =for example, for instance

Clarification

Δηλαδή= namely

με άλλα λόγια= in other words

ειδικά, ειδικότερα, συγκεκριμένα, σαφέστερα = in particular, specifically

αναλυτικά= analytically

για να γίνω πιο σαφής= to be more specific.

Contrast & Concession

αν και, παρόλο που =although, even though

ακόμα και αν= even if, even so

εντούτοις, όμως, ωστόσο =however

αλλά=but

διαφορετικά=otherwise

αντίθετα= in contrast

σε αντίθεση με= contrary to

Contingency

αν= if

εκτός κι αν=unless

σε περίπτωση που= in case of

με την προϋπόθεση ότι= provided that

υπό τον όρο ότι= on condition that

Addition

επίσης=also

ακόμη, επιπλέον, επιπρόσθετα= additionally

εξάλλου=besides

παράλληλα= moreover

ταυτόχρονα= at the same time

ομοίως=similarly

Consequence

επομένως, συνεπώς, άρα =thus, therefore

τελικά=finally, eventually

ώστε= so that

καταλήγοντας, ολοκληρώνοντας =to conclude

συμπερασματικά= in conclusion

 κατά συνέπεια, ως επακόλουθο = accordingly, as a consequence

σύμφωνα με τα παραπάνω=according to the above

γι’ αυτόν τον λόγο= hence, why

όπως προκύπτει= as it emerges

Reason

Γιατί, επειδή, διότι=because

Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος γιατί..=that’s the reason why

Sequence

Τώρα=now

Πριν= before

Έπειτα, μετά,ύστερα=after

Πρώτα απ’όλα=first of all

Αργότερα=afterwards

Όταν=when

εν τω μεταξύ=in the meanwhile

Στη συνέχεια=subsequently
