Athena Asks Zeus for Help

Odysseus has been stuck on the island of Ogygia with the beautiful sea nymph Calypso for the past seven years. Staring blankly out to sea as he sits on the beach, Odysseus is desperately homesick.

Athena intercedes on behalf of Odysseus before her father, Zeus. Zeus relents, and now Athena can put her plan into action.

The Descent of Athena to Ithaca

The goddess Athena decides to intervene and descends to Ithaca, where she meets Odysseus’ son Telemachus. Pretending to be a man named Mentor, she suggests the young man start a search for his father.

Η θεά Αθηνά αποφασίζει να παρέμβει και κατεβαίνει στην Ιθάκη, όπου συναντά τον γιο του Οδυσσέα, Τηλέμαχο. Προσποιούμενη έναν άντρα, τον Μέντορα, προτείνει στον Τηλέμαχο να αρχίσει να ερευνά για τον πατέρα του.

Phemius Singing to the Suitors

Phemius is forced by the suitors to sing pleasing songs with his lyre, yet he does not explicitly express his allegiance to the suitors. He sings a song of lament about the Achaeans in the Trojan War, and of long lost Odysseus who has never returned.

O Φήμιος αναγκάζεται από τους μνηστήρες να τραγουδήσει ευχάριστα τραγούδια με τη λύρα του, όμως αυτός δεν τηρεί άμεσα την υπόσχεσή του. Τραγουδά έναν θρήνο για τους Αχαιούς στον Τρωικό πόλεμο και για τον Οδυσσέα που ποτέ δεν ξαναγύρισε στο σπίτι του.

The Suitors Discover Penelop’s Ruse

It was 20 years since Odysseus had left his palace, but still, his wife Penelope had some hope he would return, though most believed him dead. Many suitors had come to woo “the widow”. She put them off with a ruse, persuading them to wait until she had finished a funeral shroud for Laertes, Odysseus’s father. In this way, she managed to deceive them for three years. While they waited, the suitors made themselves the king’s uninvited guests, eating him out of house and home. But then Penelope’s ruse was discovered and the suitors demanded a decision.

Πέρασαν 20 χρόνια από τότε που ο Οδυσσέας είχε αφήσει το παλάτι του, αλλά η γυναίκα του Πηνελόπη είχε κάποια ελπίδα ότι θα επιστρέψει, αν και οι περισσότεροι πίστευαν ότι ήταν νεκρός.
