Glossary of Grammar Terms Part 9

Syllable (Συλλαβή): words are divided into syllables in terms of pronunciation τρα-πέ-ζι

Temporal clause (Χρονική πρόταση): an adverbial clause which denotes time (see also adverbial clause) O Στέλιος θα έρθει όταν μπορέσει

Tense (Χρόνος): a grammatical category of the verb that primarily refers to the time of the action

Past (Παρελθόν): In Greek there are three different sets of forms (both active and passive), which make reference to past events: the past perfective (Αόριστος) the past imperfective (Παρατατικός) and the past perfect (Υπερσυντέλικος) Χτες το απόγευμα έπαιξα μπάσκετ με τους φίλους μου. Έπαιζα κάθε απόγευμα μπάσκετ όταν έμενα στην Αθήνα Τότε, πολύ πριν φύγω, είχα παίξει και σε μια ταινία.

Present (Παρόν): In Greek there are two tenses with present reference: the present tense (Ενεστώτας) and present perfect tense (Παρακείμενος) Ο Στέλιος δουλεύει αυτή τη στιγμή/ πολλές ώρες κάθε μέρα. Ο Στέλιος έχει ταξιδέψει σε όλο τον κόσμο για τις υποθέσεις του.

Future (Μέλλον): In Greek there are three different sets of verb forms (both active and passive) that we can use in order to refer to future actions or events: the future imperfective (Συνεχής Μέλλοντας), the future perfective (Συνοπτικός Μέλλοντας), and the future perfect (Συντελεσμένος Μέλλοντας) Θα διαβάζω όλη μέρα την Κυριακή γιατί τη Δευτέρα γράφω διαγώνισμα. Θα καλέσω πολλούς φίλους μου στο επόμενο πάρτι Θα έχω γράψει τις ασκήσεις μέχρι τις 6.00.

Transitive verb (Μεταβατικό ρήμα): a verb that requires one or more complements Ο Στέλιος αγαπάει την Αγκάθα. Ο Στέλιος δίνει ένα τριαντάφυλλο στην Αγκάθα.

Verb (Ρήμα): an inflected word that expresses an action, an event, a process or a state γράφω, βαριέμαι

Verb group (Ομάδα ρημάτων / Συζυγία): a group of verbs that inflect in the same way. In Modern Greek there are two main groups of verbs according to the ending of their citation form / entry A) γράφω, Β) αγαπάω/-ώ, εξηγώ
