The Subjunctive Mood
In general
The Subjunctive Mood is used basically to express wish, hope, expectation, intentions, and also to make suggestions and negative commands.
It can be Continuous or Simple Subjunctive. Τhe Continuous Subjunctive shows actions that occur all the time/ or at no specific time while Simple Subjunctive shows actions that occur at a specific time
Continuous subjunctive
For actions happening all the time or at no specific time
It’s formed by the expressions:
θέλω να [ Ι want to]
μπορώ να [ I’m able to]
μου αρέσει να [ I like to]
ελπίζω να [ I hope]
περιμένω να [ I wait for]
σκέφτομαι να [ I think of]
εύχομαι να [ Ι wish]
πρέπει να [ I have to] + the verb in the
για να [ in order to] Simple Present
μην [don’t!]
να μην [not to]
πριν [ before]
όταν [when]
ας [let’s]
αν [if]
USAGE EXAMPLES
Θέλω να τρώω παγωτό κάθε μέρα! – Ι want to eat ice cream every day!
Όταν πίνετε, μην οδηγείτε. – When you drink, don’t drive.
Σηκώνομαι νωρίς για να πάω σχολείο. – Ι get up early to go to school.
Θέλεις πάντα να είσαι το επίκεντρο της προσοχής – You always want to be the center of attention.
Για να είσαι καλός μαθητής, πρέπει να διαβάζεις πολύ.- In order to be a good student, you have to study a lot.
