Conditional sentences have two parts: the if-clause and the result-clause (apodosis). The if-clause is usually introduced by the conjunctions αν / εάν (if), άμα (if) and other phrases such as έτσι και (if), σε περίπτωση που (in case that), εκτός κι αν (unless), είτε / ή… είτε / ή (whether… or not).

Aν είχα φτερά, θα πετούσα.

Types of conditionals

Factual conditionals
In factual conditionals, the if-clause expresses a fact which is or can be fulfilled and the main clause expresses a fact which will be or should be fulfilled too.

αν+any verb form (past imperfective past perfect) — any indicative verb form or imperative (present / future / past)

Αν μένεις στην Αθήνα, βλέπεις συχνά τους φίλους σου

Άμα μείνεις στην Αθήνα, θα βλέπεις συχνά τους φίλους σου.

Σε περίπτωση που έμεινες στην Αθήνα, θα έβλεπες συχνά τους φίλους σου.

Αν έχεις μείνει στην Αθήνα, θα έχεις δει πολλούς φίλους.

Αν μείνεις στην Αθήνα, να βλέπεις συχνά τους φίλους σου
