Ancient Greek said to sharpen modern mind

The Ancient Greek Language is one of the oldest written languages on the Earth, and it belongs to the Indo-European family. Many scholars have examined the phonology, the morphology or other structures of the Ancient Greek language, and almost all have pointed out that it is one of the most accurately structured and logical languages of all times. Learning Greek, therefore, is great for brain development.

The Ancient Greek Language distinguishes from other Indo- European languages mainly for its uniqueness. The main difference between the Ancient Greek language and other languages is its alphabet. Its alphabet is unique, and it is designed with mathematical structure. The Greek alphabet laid the foundation for many of the accomplishments of the western world. The Greeks took the Phoenician or North Semitic alphabet, changed five consonants to vowels and applied geometric structure and order to the uneven Phoenician characters, converting them into art forms of great harmony and beauty. “The Greek language has the best mathematical structure, and it will be used for new generation of most sophisticated computers because only in the Greek language, there are no limits” (Gates). A further difference between Classical Greek and other languages is that the language itself has remained constant. Pronunciation has changed a bit, but speakers of modern Greek can read ancient texts reasonably well without special training.

It is alleged that learning Greek is really hard, but it is something that everyone can benefit from. The Ancient Greek language is a conceptual language. Unlike other languages, it contains words with a particular meaning. This means that every word has a meaning and a reason for its existence. It’ s not simply a series of symbols. Τhis is the reason why it is so precise in terms of its meanings. This accuracy is intimately linked to mathematics. According to the results of a study by the Pedagogic Institute, “79.7 percent of teachers said that Ancient Greek offers students a stronger grasp of Modern Greek and particularly helps those who go on to study physics and mathematics. Just over 68 percent replied that Ancient Greek also helps boost critical thinking and mental skills” (Kathimerini). The study questioned 350 junior high school teachers across Greece.  The survey clearly shows that critical thinking and Ancient Greek go hand-in-hand.

Also, the Ancient Greek Language is considered to be one of the richest and most creative languages of all times, which can enhance creative skills. Many English words have Greek origins. Some examples are democracy, aristocrats, pedagogy, archeology, biology, phonology, history, and many others. The richness of its vocabulary allows every reader to experiment with the language and not only to find the ideal word for every context, but also to invent new words. In other words, learning Greek means acquiring creative skills. “The knowledge of the Greek language is an indispensable foundation for someone who wishes to achieve a high cultural level” ( McDonald). Creativity are productivity, therefore, are related to the knowledge of Classical Greek.
To conclude, the Ancient Greek Language is the tool of human thought. Therefore, every learner or every user of Greek can reap the benefits. They can improve their critical and creative skills, mental alertness, and they can reach their full potential.
