The particle θα which appears in the periphrastic future forms expresses, among other things, probability. The speaker maintains that the event denoted by the verb is probably true. In such cases θα corresponds to or could be substituted by μάλλον (δεν) / ίσως / μπορεί να.
Θα έχετε δει -φαντάζομαι- την Κλειώ να χορεύει Θα έχει κάνει μαθήματα χορού.
This θα can also be used with past verb forms (past imperfective, past perfective, past perfect), thereby expressing different degrees of likelihood according to the speaker’s opinion.
Θα έχασε τα κλειδιά της, γι’ αυτό δεν μπορεί να ανοίξει Θα είχε κοιμηθεί όταν εσύ μπήκες μέσα
Ο Λάκης θα έτρωγε όλο το αρνί μόνος του!
Do not confuse the impersonal μπορεί να (=ίσως, μάλλον) with the personal verb μπορώ να (= είμαι ικανός να).
Ο Γιάννης μπορεί να βρει τον κλέφτη a. Gianis may find… b. Gianis is able to find….
Past verb forms with θα (usually θα μπορούσα, -ες etc., θα ήθελα, -ες etc.) are also used as expressions of polite orders or indirect wishes/intentions.
Θα μπορούσες να κλείνεις την πόρτα κάθε φορά που μπαίνεις μέσα; Θα πήγαινα ευχαρίστως διακοπές μαζί σου, Αγκάθα!
In negation, δεν is used.
Δεν θα έφυγαν ακόμη. Ακούω την Αγκάθα να παίζει πιάνο
Clauses with θα- verbal forms often combine with αν-clauses (see conditional clauses)
Θα θύμωνε με την Κλειώ ο Κώστας, αν ήξερε ότι πήρε τους δίσκους του χωρίς να τον ρωτήσει.
Θα έφτασε κιόλας (Θα φτάνει τώρα) στο Λονδίνο η Αγκάθα, αν το αεροπλάνο δεν είχε καθυστέρηση.
In questions possibility can also be expressed with να followed by a verb.
Να πρόλαβε το τρένο ο Σαχίνης;
