How to express wish

Ευχή (wish)

A wish referring to the future is expressed by the subjunctive verb forms (i.e. periphrastic forms with να, ας). The particle να is often reinforced with μακάρι, αχ και or even longer expressions (such as Παναγία μου, ας ήταν να …).

Μακάρι να έρχεται πάντα στην ώρα της η Αγκάθα! Αχ και να έρθει σήμερα η Αγκάθα! Ας έχει φτάσει τώρα στο αεροδρόμιο!

Wishes that are considered unlikely to be fulfilled are expressed by either imperfective (παρατατικός) or past perfect (υπερσυντέλικος) when we refer to the past. These structures are introduced by the particles να, ας

Να είχε θυμηθεί να κλείσει εισιτήριο για το ταξίδι η Αγκάθα! Ας με έπαιρνε μαζί του ο Γιάννης στο ταξίδι!

In both cases negation is expressed by μην

Μακάρι να μη φύγει η Αγκάθα! Ας μην αργούσε σήμερα τόσο πολύ ο Λάκης!
