Question words

Question words are placed at the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes their use is confusing because some of them are declined, i.e. they have singular and plural, genders and cases. Note that we use the Greek question mark:  ;

Ποιος, ποια, ποιο = who, which

Ποιος είναι αυτός ο άντρας; Who is this man?

Ποια είναι η αδερφή σου; Who is your sister?

Ποιο είναι το ποτήρι σου; Which one is your glass?

ποιον, ποια, ποιο  : whom, which

Με ποιους πήγες σινεμά; With whom did he go to the movies?

Πού : where

Πού είναι η παραλία;  Where’s the beach?

Πότε : when

Πότε θα πας στους συγγενείς σου; When will you visit your relatives?

Πώς : how

Πώς ήρθες; How did you get here?

Τίνος : whose

Tίνος είναι αυτά τα χρήματα; Whose is this money?

Τι : what

Τι θέλεις να πιείς; What would you like to drink?

Γιατί :why

Γιατί δεν έρχεσαι μαζί μας; Why don’t you come with us?

Πόσος, πόση, πόσο πόσοι, πόσες, πόσα : how much, how many. Πόσοι άνθρωποι είναι εδώ;  How many people are here?

πόσο μακριά:  how far

Πόσο μακριά είναι το χωριό;  How far is the village?

πώς και (pos kai):  how come

Πώς και δεν ήρθε η Μαίρη μαζί σου; How come Mary didn’t come with you?

Πώς κι έτσι: how come

“Του χρόνου θα πάω στην Ελλάδα.” next year I’ll go to Greece.

“πώς κι έτσι” How come?

μήπως :  do you happen to….?

Μήπως ξέρετε που είναι το φαρμακείο; Do you happen to   know where’s the pharmacy?
