The past participle

The traditionally called “medio-passive perfect participle”  comes from the passive perfective stem of the verb and it behaves like an adjective.

Ex. H Σοφία είναι πολύ κουρασμένη.

The participle is formed by the passive perfective stem and the ending -μένος, -η, -ο. The stem may change:

αγαπώ αγαπήθ-ηκα → αγαπημένος / αγαπημένη / αγαπημένο διαβάζω διαβάστ-ηκα → διαβασμένος / διαβασμένη / διαβασμένο

κρύβω κρύφτ-ηκα → κρυμμένος / κρυμμένη / κρυμμένο γράφω γράφτ-ηκα → γραμμένος / γραμμένη / γραμμένο

ανοίγω ανοίχτ-ηκα → ανοιγμένος / ανοιγμένη / ανοιγμένο αναπτύσσω αναπτύχθ-ηκα → αναπτυγμένος / αναπτυγμένη / αναπτυγμένο

μολύνω μολύνθ-ηκα → μολυσμένος / μολυσμένη / μολυσμένο απομακρύνω  απομακρύνθ-ηκα→ απομακρυσμένος / απομακρυσμένη / απομακρυσμένο

In cases where the stem ends in –ευτ– the participles drop the -υ- except for the cases where the active perfective stem ends in -ευς

μαγειρεύω  μαγειρεύτηκα → μαγειρεμένος / μαγειρεμένη / μαγειρεμένο but εκπαιδεύω  εκπαιδεύτηκα  → εκπαιδευμένος / εκπαιδευμένη / εκπαιδευμένο

  Some participles in  –γμένος can drop the -γ

πετάω πετάχτηκα → πετα(γ)μένος / πετα(γ)μένη / πετα(γ)μένο βρέχω  βράχηκα → βρε(γ)μένος / βρε(γ)μένη / βρε(γ)μένο

Transitive verbs with both active and passive voice usually form these participles, but there are some exceptions.

ανεβαίνω  ανέβασα   ανεβασμένος

κατεβαίνω  κατέβασα  κατεβασμένος

αρρωσταίνω αρρώστησα αρρωστημένος

δακρύζω  δάκρυσα δακρυσμένος

θυμώνω θύμωσα θυμωμένος

πέφτω  έπεσα  πεσμένος

πεινώ   πείνασα πεινασμένος

διψώ   δίψασα διψασμένος

μεθώ   μέθυσα  μεθυσμένος
