Ή Σαπφώ ήταν εκείνη που ύμνησε τον έρωτα με τη σοβαρότητα και το πάθος μίας μεγαλοφυΐας. Εκείνη που μετέπλασε σε ποίηση τον θαυμασμό για τη γυναίκα και μας παρέδωσε τη διαχρονική περιγραφή του ερωτικού πόθου πριν από 2.600 χρόνια:

Η πρόσληψη του έργου της Σαπφούς αλλάζει με το πέρασμα των αιώνων, ανάλογα κάθε φορά με τη στάση της κοινωνίας απέναντι στον ερωτισμό και τη σεξουαλικότητα. Από την αποθέωση που γνώρισαν τα ποιήματά της στην αρχαιότητα, ακολούθησε το κάψιμό τους στην πυρά από τους πρώτους χριστιανούς για να «ανακαλυφθούν» ξανά στην Αναγέννηση και να παραδοθούν στη συνέχεια στη σύγχρονη φιλολογική κριτική.
Τα γεγονότα που γνωρίζουμε με βεβαιότητα για τη ζωή της Σαπφούς είναι ελάχιστα. Η ιστορική έρευνα έχει αποδείξει ότι έζησε στα τέλη του 7ου με αρχές του 6ου αιώνα π.Χ. στη Λέσβο. Καταγόταν από εύπορη οικογένεια, όπως συμπεραίνουμε από την αναφορά της ότι ο αδελφός της Λάριχος, υπηρετούσε ως οινοχόος στο πρυτανείο της Μυτιλήνης, αξίωμα που προοριζόταν για νεαρούς βλαστούς καλών οικογενειών, οι οποίοι διέθεταν ωραία εμφάνιση. Θεωρείται πολύ πιθανό να ήταν παντρεμένη με έναν πλούσιο άντρα από την Άνδρο, τον Κερκώλα, από τον οποίο είχε αποκτήσει μία κόρη, την Κλεΐδα, το «χρυσό λουλούδι μου», όπως ανέφερε η ίδια σε ποίημά της.
Είναι ιστορικά αποδεδειγμένο πλέον ότι ο μύθος περί αυτοκτονίας της (άλμα στο κενό από βράχια), λόγω της απόρριψής της από έναν άνδρα, του Φάωνα, ήταν ένα κατασκεύασμα των συγγραφέων της Νέας Κωμωδίας, το οποίο πρόβαλε ο Χριστιανισμός για να δείξει την «τιμωρία όσων παρασύρονται από τα πάθη του έρωτα». Για τη Νέα Κωμωδία ήταν ειρωνεία να πεθαίνει για έναν άντρα η γυναίκα που μεγαλούργησε υμνώντας τον έρωτα των γυναικών. Για τον Χριστιανισμό ήταν θέμα ηθικής τάξης. Και για τους δύο όμως, ήταν απλά μία κατασκευή και όχι η πραγματικότητα…
